UNCONSCIOUS MOTIVATION

TRANSFERENCE: Reaction toward people in present situations as one felt and acted toward important people in early life. Otherwise puzzling behavior and feelings toward certain people can often be explained in terms of TRANSFERENCE. For example, Ray was surprised and chagrined over his almost uncontrollable resentment toward his new boss. His boss had never done anything to hurt Ray — nothing Ray could put his finger on. Toronto Niagara Falls Tour Funds Tip of the WeekLooking outside you will notice that the winter thaw is lastly complete. But still, Ray couldn’t stand him. One day he had to turn and walk away to keep from saying something unpleasant to his boss. It was some months later that Ray was reading his psychology assignment and came across the word TRANSFERENCE. That was it! It suddenly dawned on Ray how much his boss reminded him of his oldest brother — with whom he certainly did not get along! Ray had reacted to his boss the way he was accustomed to act toward his brother. This was why the intensity of his feeling was so out of proportion to the situation.
UNCONSCIOUS: The sum of all thoughts, impulses, desires and feelings of which the individual is not conscious but which influence his behavior. That part (or aspect) of the mind which acts as a “safe deposit vault” for past experiences that have been “forgotten.” (See REPRESSION.) Probably no “forgotten” conflicts, feelings, experiences, are ever really lost. They continue to exist in the UNCONSCIOUS. They exert a subtle influence on conscious thinking and behavior. UNCONSCIOUS (childhood) ways of meeting CONFLICT are often dusted off and put to work on CONFLICTS in adult life. Acts which seem “out of character” for the person concerned may be due to UNCONSCIOUS MOTIVATION.
